WELLINGTON REGIONAL AQUATIC CENTRE - SHALLOW WATER POOL AND SPRAY PARK DEVELOPMENT

Wellington City Council’s vision for the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre (WRAC) in the heart of suburban Kilbirnie was that of an indoor ‘water play’ facility and ‘spray park’, a place that could provide aquatic learning, exploration and excitement for children and their families. The new 1600m² extension has continued HDT’s ongoing relationship with Wellington City Council, providing architectural services for aquatic and recreational facilities. It includes fixed and movable spray jets, geysers, numerous water features, natural lighting, a high degree of integration between structure and building services, and a number of environmental design features.

The addition of the water-play area has consolidated the recreational aquatic aspect into a designated area, allowing the existing facility to cater more effectively to aquatic sports and programmes. The success of the extension is reflected in the increased patronage of the facility, and in the creation of a light, open and exciting aquatic space.
